Middlesex County Republican Candidate for Sheriff Admits Role in Illegal Smear Campaign

Middlesex County, NJ –Middlesex County Republican Sheriff’s Candidate Anthony “Tony” Gallo admitted in a court-ordered settlement that he called Woodbridge Township Court Officials in an attempt to receive personal information about Carteret Mayor Daniel J. Reiman, and an alleged charge that was the subject of a smear campaign about the Mayor that never occurred.

A copy of the Settlement Agreement between Mr. Gallo and Mayor Reiman can be seen at www.danreiman.com/courtdocuments.

The Settlement Agreement between Gallo and Reiman

Woodbridge Municipal Court Judge David Stahl previously determined probable cause for the issuance of criminal charges against Anthony Gallo, the former Carteret Republican Municipal Chair, defeated Carteret Republican Council Candidate, and who today is the Republican party-endorsed candidate for Middlesex County Sheriff. The charges allege that Gallo called the Woodbridge Court and identified himself as Mayor Reiman to obtain information regarding charges that did not exist. The complaint also alleged that Gallo attempted to adjourn or reschedule the Mayor’s non-existent court dates without the Mayor’s knowledge and that Gallo obtained the services of a Woodbridge Municipal Court employee to conduct a search for the non-existent tickets. All charges were settled in mediation, with Mr. Gallo  admitting his role in the smear campaign against Mayor Reiman. Gallo agreed  to offer a public apology, admit his involvement in the vicious smear campaign, and post the following signed statement:

  1. Mr. Gallo acknowledges that in October 2018 he called the Woodbridge Courthouse to obtain information about allegations spread during the 2018 campaign regarding Carteret Mayor Dan Reiman.
  2. The Woodbridge courthouse staff believed that they were talking to Dan Reiman, however, Mr. Gallo believes the recording of the call had been altered by a third party.
  3. Mr. Gallo apologizes to Mayor Reiman for making this call to the Courthouse.
  4. Mr. Gallo further acknowledges there were no summonses, arrests, or any charges of any kind against Mr. Reiman.
  5. Both parties agree that they will post this agreement verbatim on their respective social media sites with these facts and clarifications.

“It’s clearly unethical that a person would call and pretend to be someone else, said Carteret Councilman AJ Johal. “What’s more unconscionable is that he wasted government resources in an attempt to advance his own political agenda. Gallo attempted to change a court date that he believed existed, which, had he not been completely wrong, as he is on all issues, could have injured Mayor Reiman by potential warrant for his arrest and suspension of driving privileges if any such charges existed.”

Gallo’s actions first came to light when a taped copy of the conversation was released by Gallo’s former running mate and one time political ally Fred Gattuso.

Gallo, a defeated 2018 Republican Council candidate in Carteret, was nominated by the Middlesex County Republican Organization to run for Sherriff against Milie Scott, the current Middlesex County Sherriff.

“It’s unconscionable that the Middlesex County Republicans would nominate Gallo for the highest elected law enforcement position in the county, after he sought to distort the justice system and clearly broke the law,” said Mayor Reiman. “The 2018 campaign went beyond the norm. Gallo brought his party to an all-time low in terms of their smear tactics and dirty tricks. This vile, unethical and corrupt Republican party used illegal campaign tactics and slanderous allegations which were again proven to be completely false, and now, 9 months after they were defeated by a 5-1 margin, Gallo was forced to admit their actions in open court and issue a public apology.”
